Forecasting
Forward dates that follow the evidence, not the wish.
What it is
The forward-looking part of the schedule — remaining durations, logic and the resulting forecast dates from the data date onward.
Why it matters
Leadership commits on the forecast. It has to follow from real progress and logic, not from a constraint or optimistic remaining durations.
In practice
- The forecast is driven by remaining duration and logic forward of the data date — not by percent complete.
- Re-test the critical path every update; the driving path forward is what matters.
- Strip artificial float and constraints before trusting forecast dates.
- A forecast that never moves despite visible slippage is being held by something artificial.
Watch for
- Forecast completion pinned by a Mandatory Finish.
- Remaining durations left untouched while the job slips.
- A forecast that reflects the plan rather than the progress.
